Softball: Wake Forest 8, Leesville Road 3

Fast start powers Wake Forest softball past Leesville Road

CorrespondentMay 7, 2014

— Wake Forest began Friday evening with a triple, RBI single, single, RBI double, RBI pop-out, single, and an RBI single in what turned out to be a five-run first inning to top Leesville Road 8-3.

While Cougars’ offensive efficiency was off the charts, converting 7-11 times with runners in scoring position, Leesville road went 0-10 with runners in scoring position. The Pride’s only runs came from a runner on first and a two-run home run by Avery Morris in the third inning.

Wake Forest coach Sam Hershey, who has his team sitting at 13-1-1 overall and 10-1 in conference play, said the Cougars are confident in the direction they are headed.

“Like most teams, we had a couple of games in the middle of the season in which our bats went silent, but we seem to be moving in the right direction now,” Hershey said. “Our pitching and defense have been really solid all season long but even there we have continued to improve.”

For Leesville Road coach Leigh Ann Genetti, the loss was a opportunity for further progression for the Pride (9-3, 8-3 Cap Eight).

“I've noticed that they are really turning into students of the game and are asking a lot of questions at practice,” Genetti said. “I feel like they are really understanding the game and our defense continues to get stronger. ... I'm proud of how they have bounced back from our two losses, learned from their mistakes and have moved forward.”
