RALEIGH — When Leesville Road made its first boys lacrosse state playoffs appearance last year, head coach Jeremy Fullbright knew that it was just the beginning for the developing program.
The Pride have started the season 4-0 in hopes of building off of last year’s success.
“We competed for a championship last year both in our conference and then by making the playoffs,” Fullbright said. “We want to make sure that’s a consistent thing for our program. That means night in and night out we have people bringing their A game. ... We went from last year having four or five guys we could count every night to play at a high level and now we’re double that and that makes a huge difference.”
Leesville Road was the aggressor Friday in a 9-4 conference win over Heritage. The Pride led 4-0 with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
Leesville senior midfielder Cody Close completed a hat trick seconds into the second half and senior attacker Drew Farrell netted two goals. C.J. Cox, Conner New, Eric Fitz and Cody Snyder each added one score for the Pride.
“We’re very excited,” Close said. “We’ve come out to a great start and I think it’s because all of the work we put in in the off season. ... We’ve returned most of our players, so I think our team cohesiveness is really good this year.”
Tyler Daniels, Justin Potwin, Dilon Campbell and Kendrick Ballard scored for the Huskies.
The Pride were scheduled to face Conference 4 powerhouse Broughton on Tuesday.
“I couldn’t really ask for a better start to the season from our guys,” Fullbright said. “They’ve been focused. We played a game right in the first week, had over a week layoff and then we played three games this week and they’ve shown up focused every night.
“The one thing in our conference is Broughton’s been on top for a while, so for our kids it’s a challenge for them not to look to that game and overlook anybody else, and I think they’ve done that and hopefully they’ll be ready.”
