The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened a new college scholarship for high-achieving, lower-income high school seniors seeking to attend the country’s best four-year colleges and universities. The scholarship will provide up to $30,000 for tuition, living expenses, books and required fees.

St. Thomas More Academy in Raleigh has been named a Rensselaer Medal School by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. This honor provides a scholarship opportunity worth a minimum of $60,000 for select math and science students who apply, are accepted and enroll at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Athens Drive High will hold a band program barbecue fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Swift Creek Community Center, 6221 Yates Mill Pond Road, Raleigh. Plates cost $8 and include barbecue pork and fried chicken, hush puppies, potatoes, slaw and sweet tea. Delivery is available to local businesses with six or more plates. Sculpture Workshop: Studio Techniques for the Non-Art Teacher is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the N.C. Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh. The Oak City Classic Vocational and College Fair will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the John P. Top Greene Center, 401 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Raleigh.
