School supplies needed

Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples will participate in the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive through Sept. 28. All donations will be given to the local Boys and Girls Clubs, who will deliver the goods to disadvantaged youths.

The local Staples stores that are participating in the supply drive are located at 2950 Millbrook Road, Raleigh; 404 E. Six Forks Road, Raleigh; and 8041 Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh.

Siemens competition

The deadline to register for the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology is 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30.

The competition provides budding high school scientists with scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 for original research in team and individual categories. Online registration is available at siemens.collegeboard.org. For more information, www.siemens-foundation.org.

Parent Academy

The Wake County Public Schools System will hold a series of workshops aimed at helping families engage with the school system and contribute to their children’s success.

In the Introducing Parents to the K-12 PowerSchool’s Parent Portal series, parents will learn about the PowerSchool Parent Portal, including account creation, sign in, and communications. Sessions will be held:

Oct. 1: 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Athens Drive High School, 1420 Athens Drive, Raleigh.

Oct. 3: 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Millbrook High School, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh.

Events are free and open to the public. Registration is required at www.wcpss.net/parent-academy.

Marching band competition

The 11th annual Heart of Carolina Marching Band Competition will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in Wolverine Stadium at Wakefield High School, 2200 Wakefield Pines Drive, Raleigh. For more information, email heartofcarolina@wakefieldhsband.org.

Scholarship available

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened a new college scholarship for high-achieving, lower-income high school seniors seeking to attend the country’s best four-year colleges and universities. The scholarship will provide up to $30,000 for tuition, living expenses, books and required fees.
