Thales Academy offers tour

Summer workshops set

Summer workshops for high school students will be offered at The Wade Edwards Foundation and Learning Lab, 714 St Mary’s St., Raleigh. The cost is $30 for the workshop and $25 for each additional workshop. Here is the schedule:

Aug. 12-15 – Write Outside the Box and Interact: Teen Relationships and Dating will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon. College Application Quick Start and Common Core Math 1 Prep will be offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Art workshop for teachers

Visual Literacy and the Common Core will be held at the N.C. Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh. The course is available as a webinar and a workshop. The webinar will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. The workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. The course will explore text and language intersections with works of art from the museum’s collection. The webinar is free, but the workshop costs $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. The webinar is worth 0.15 Continuing Education Credits, and the workshop is worth 0.5 credits in Literacy. Registration is required at www.artnc.org/programs. The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences seeks applicants for the Girls in Science Connect: Nature program, to be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays Oct.3-Dec.7.

The eight-week program is for girls in grades 6-7 who have shown ability and interest in the sciences. Participants will engage in hands-on science experiences, including an overnight stay at the museum and an open house.

To be eligible, you must be a resident of Wake or the surrounding counties and be nominated by a current or previous science teacher and another unrelated adult.

The fee is $150, and the deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16. Applications must be emailed to Kathryn Fromson at kathryn.fromson@naturalsciences.org or faxed to 919-715-6439. Boys and Girls Clubs seek school supplies

Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples will participate in the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive through Sept. 28. All donations will be given to the local Boys and Girls Clubs, who will deliver the goods to disadvantaged youths.

The local Staples stores that are participating in the supply drive are located at: 2950 Millbrook Road, Raleigh; 404 E. Six Forks Road, Raleigh; and 8041 Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh.
