Scouts help Haven House, earn bronze

Nine Raleigh Girl Scouts from Troop 326 worked together to earn their Bronze Award, the highest possible achievement for Juniors.

Earning their Bronze Awards were Evanna Edward, Riley Houser, Elena Kelly, Rachael Kluge, Amara Lockett, Sydney McIntyre, Kelly Thomas, Sarah Timin and Sydney T.

The girls reached out to local nonprofit Haven House to see how their troop could help. They orchestrated donation drives at their two elementary schools, Leesville Road and Sycamore Creek. As an incentive for the students to donate, the troop promised the top donating classes at each school a Girl Scout cookie party.

The troop collected more than 700 food and household items from the drives. The girls delivered the donations and also brought lunch for more than 30 volunteers working at Haven House that day.

The Bronze Award is the third highest award for the Girl Scouts. Only Girl Scout Juniors ages 8-11 or in fourth or fifth grades can earn the honor. The award requires a girl to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Girls may work on the award individually or in a group.

Scouts hold race for cancer foundation

Girl Scouts from Troop 486 recently held a 5k run/walk in honor of a fellow student who died from brain cancer. The Scouts raised $4,843 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and seven earned their Bronze Awards.

The event drew 115 participants to Lynn Road Elementary School on May 4. More than half were younger than 11, helping the Scouts meet another goal to encourage kids to exercise.

The Girl Scout Juniors who earned their Bronze Awards were Rachel Chapman, Miranda Cominole, Katelyn Conn, Jana Harrison, Ruby Phipps, Lane Swecker and Briana Wells.

The Scouts were involved in all aspects of the event. They designed the logo for the T-shirts, handed out fliers to alert residents about the race, sought sponsors and publicized the event. They participated in weekly running practices and encouraged others to join.

Sawmill Tap Room also held a fundraiser for the event and donated more than $2,500 to the foundation.
