Hospice of Wake annual dinner
Hospice of Wake County will hold its 2012 annual dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. Award-winning North Carolina author Clyde Edgerton will speak. The event will include a cocktail reception, dinner and live auction.
Last year’s dinner raised $101,000, which translates into about 673 days of direct patient care; this year’s goal is $111,000. Proceeds will also support Hospice of Wake County’s Horizons Grief Center. Tickets are $150; tables seating 10 are $1,500. Present drive for kids with cancer
A “Presents for Paxton” drive, in honor of what would have been Paxton Seneri’s 4th birthday on Feb. 19, is being held until the end of February. A collection of items that would brighten a day at the hospital will be donated to pediatric cancer patients at UNC and Duke. Suggested items include bubbles, play-dough, board games, Wii games, movies and toys. Bring new, unopened toys to The Dance Attic, The Tumble Gym at The Factory and Stony Hill Baptist Church in Wake Forest.

Books for Troops
Both locations of Cartridge World, 6325 Falls of Neuse in Sutton Square and 4112 Pleasant Valley Road in Villages of Townridge, are collecting books for the Books For Troops campaign through Wednesday, Feb. 29. Donate books and receive a discount on your purchase of ink or toner. The books are going to Marines in Afghanistan. The stores are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Wake Forest Athletic registration
Registration for the Wake Forest recreational sports is open Feb. 1-29.
Youth baseball, softball and t-ball are open to boys ages 5-17 and girls ages 5-15. Dream League, an adaptive baseball league for special-needs children, is open to ages 5-17. League drafts and team placement will begin in April for youth baseball, softball, t-ball and dream league. League age is determined by participant’s age on April 30. Cost is $40 for Wake Forest residents and $80 for nonresidents for youth baseball, softball, t-ball and dream league.
For the men’s recreational softball league, play will begin the week of March 12. Games will be played on Mondays and Wednesdays. Entry fee is $550 per team.

Artists needed
The Town of Wake Forest Public Art Commission is seeking an artist or team of artists to create two or more site-specific artworks that offer compelling, contextually sensitive outdoor seating along White Street in Wake Forest. The artist must work within a budget to design and produce sculptural seating and collaborate with town engineers and the design team responsible for implementing the second phase of the South White Street Streetscape Project.

Last Band Standing concert
Band Together’s Last Band Standing starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Lincoln Theatre. Five music industry judges will vote to determine winners among four local bands. Audience members also vote and get more votes by bringing canned food, which will be donated to Urban Ministries of Wake County.

Carolina Hurricanes honor Flight 93 heroes
During the March 1 game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers at the RBC Center, the Hurricanes will honor the 40 fallen heroes of United Flight 93, helping to raise money to build the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The game will host family members of the 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93.

Teen poetry contest
Online submissions for Wake County libraries’ annual Teen Poetry Contest will be accepted from Feb. 1 through March 15 at www.wakegov.com/libraries. Students in grades 6-12 may submit as many as three original poems. Winners’ poems will be published in an online chapbook, and they will be invited to read in area libraries during April for National Poetry Month. Prizes will also be awarded to the winners in each grade category. Teachers may assign the project for extra credit in their classrooms.
Wake Electric offers summer basketball camp scholarships
Wake Electric is providing basketball camp scholarships for one young woman to attend the Kellie Harper Basketball Academy at N.C. State University in Raleigh and one young man to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Kellie Harper Wolfpack Basketball Academy is scheduled from June 24-27. The Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp is scheduled from June 16-20. Wake Electric is accepting applications until March 30.
Students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grade are eligible to apply. Applicants must live in Wake, Durham, Johnston, Vance, Granville, Nash or Franklin counties.

Police Memorial Foundation Golf Tournament
The third annual Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation Golf Tournament is set for Monday, March 26, at North Ridge Country Club, 6612 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. Registration costs $100 per player and includes a meal. Players may register individually or in foursomes.
Proceeds will support the foundation and its mission to honor Raleigh officers who have died in the line of duty. Library book sale and festival
Wake County Public Libraries will hold its annual Book Sale and Festival of Reading at the N.C. State Fairgrounds’ Jim Graham Building March 29-April 1. On Friday, live music will be played throughout the day; on Saturday, events will include face painting, balloon art, storybook characters and children’s games. The bookmobile will offer children’s storytimes and library membership signups.
