School Notes

Lunch In at Wake Forest Elementary

Students at Wake Forest Elementary learned about healthy eating as Chef Greg Goldberg of Girasole Trattoria and Gatehouse Tavern was awarded the Iron Carrot at Lunch In, an Iron Chef-style competition.

The program’s objective is to have local chefs create healthy lunches using a secret ingredient. Chef Goldberg beat Chef Jeff Dowdle of 1250 Heritage using Swiss chard, which was donated by the Wake Forest Farmers Market.

Lunch In is sponsored by Advocates for Health in Action to raise awareness and engage the community to advocate for fresh, local healthy school lunches in Wake County.

Working in the school kitchen for one hour, each chef prepared three dishes. The student judges were winners of the school’s healthy recipe contest and Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones.

The event was held by the school’s PTA and was attended by students and their families who enjoyed samples of foods from local vendors, gathered healthy meal and snack ideas, created vegetable sculptures, made seed necklaces and learned about school meals.

Attention program at Ravenscroft

Cathy Davidson, author of “Now You See It: How the Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work and Learn,” will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, March 19, in the Christina B. Jones Theatre at Ravenscroft School Fine Arts Center, 7409 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. She will talk about her research on attention blindness and the challenge it creates. Her presentation will be followed by a question and answer session and a book signing. Davidson is the Ruth F. DeVarney professor of English and John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke University.
