Engineering Career Fair at N.C. State
The College of Engineering at N.C. State University is holding an Engineering Career Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the McKimmon Center, 1101 Gorman St., Raleigh. About 200 companies and government agencies looking to fill jobs and internships are scheduled to attend. The event is free for job seekers. Granville Little Theatre presents Hairspray directed by Dr. Joanne Fruth at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3, 4, 10 and 11 and at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Oxford City Hall Auditorium, 300 Williamsboro St., Oxford. The starring role of Tracy Turnblad is played by Kimberly Genna of Raleigh. Hairspray is a musical comedy and features 1960s-style dance music. It is set in Baltimore during 1962 when the civil rights movement was gathering strength. The cast features a diverse cast from Granville, Vance, Franklin, and Wake counties. Black History Month Celebration
A Black History Month Celebration is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wake County Office Park. Free family events will take place in the Wake County Commons Building and Historic Oak View County Park with a hay wagon shuttle operating continuously between the sites. Lester Thomas, president of the Ujima Group in Cary, will lead the festivities at the Commons, which will include moments with Margaret Rose Murray, local radio talk show host and educator; Angel Patrol, dancers from Michener’s Grove Baptist Church; and the Martin Luther King Jr. All Children’s Choir. Children’s activities will include a quilting craft and a quiz wheel with prizes. At Oak View Historic Park, Shaw University’s WSHA-FM 88.9 will be doing a live broadcast from noon to 3 p.m. African cuisine will be available for purchase. Krispy Kreme Challenge
The Eighth Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, in which participants run two miles from the N.C. State bell tower to the downtown Raleigh Krispy Kreme store, eat 12 doughnuts, and return to the tower in less than an hour, will take place Saturday. The race benefits the N.C. Children’s Hospital. Granite Falls Swim and Athletic Club is supporting Backpack Buddies with the Souper Bowl of Caring. Visit the club, 800 Granite Falls Road, Rolesville, until Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5, and place kid-friendly, individually wrapped packages of food in the Patriots or Giants box. Items needed are individual cups of applesauce, Easy Mac, Pop-Top Chunky Soups or Pasta, Individual Cups of Pasta, individual boxes of cereal or oatmeal, individual servings of tuna fish and 18 oz. jars of peanut butter. All donations will be given to Northeast Wake Backpack Buddies program.
