Helen Thomas Hassler, of Raleigh, died December 20, 2011.
Born on September 3, 1922, near Barium Springs, NC, she was a retired teacher. She graduated from Flora MacDonald College in 1943, received a master’s degree in home economics from the University of Tennessee in 1952, was a member of the faculty at Josephus Daniels Junior High School from 1958 to 1985, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority.
For over 50 years she was an active member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, where she served both as an elder and a deacon, was active in her women’s circle, and was made a life member of Presbyterian Women. In her later years, she enjoyed cooking, dancing, gardening and sharing the produce she grew with family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, William Walton Hassler. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Hassler of San Ramon, CA; a son, William Thomas Hassler of Washington, D.C.; a son-in-law, Mark Camenzind; a daughter-in-law, Mary Gay Sprague; two granddaughters, Grace Hassler and Kathy Camenzind; and two grandsons, Gabriel Hassler and Thomas Camenzind.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2011, at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church.
