Millbrook running back Keith Marshall was named the North Carolina Gatorade high school football player of the year Thursday.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Marshall rushed for 1,891 yards and 25 touchdowns while leading Millbrook to a 6-6 record in 2011 and a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-AA playoffs.

He is the school's all-time leading rusher, having piled up 1,560 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns in 2010 and 1,166 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2009 as a sophomore.

  • Keith Marshall didn't allow his recruitment to become a distraction during the season and he is expected to make his college announcement Tuesday at Millbrook High School.

His list of schools is Georgia, Clemson, Florida, Notre Dame, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Expect no multiple hats, just a simple announcement with praise from his parents, coaches and teammates. To read about Marshall's decision, go to newsobserver.com/sports

Marshall is one of the fastest high school players in the country and consistently has run 40 yards in less than 4.4 seconds. He was the NCHSAA 4A state 100 meters champion last spring and has a 4.29 overall grade point average.

He is expected to announce his college decision on Tuesday. Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Clemson are believed to be his leaders.

"Keith deserves any award he receives," said Millbrook coach Clarence Inscore. "He has thought of his team first throughout the season and kept his priorities straight. He has worked extremely hard and done everything that we have asked of him."
