As I was walking into the grocery store with my kids, I noticed that there was a lot of leg showing between Trevor's sock and the bottom of his jeans.
He had put on the pair of jeans for the first time since April and must have grown a lot more over the summer than I had realized.
With the fall weather in the Triangle alternating between needing sunscreen and wearing sweaters, it always takes me a few weeks to purge the too-short pants from the kids' drawers and shop for new ones.
And since my kids always seem to pull the shortest pair of pants from their dresser, they spend every October looking like they are ready for the Great Flood.
Because I just knew that I was going to run into every person I had ever met while shopping, I decided to try to hide the fact that my son was wearing pants a size too small. I tried to see if he would wear his pants lower on his waist to make them look longer. I pulled his socks up. And I even contemplated letting him ride in the cart for the first time in years. But in the end, I decide to not worry about it and just shook my head.
Of course, I immediately ran into a friend I hadn't seen in weeks and opened my mouth to explain Trevor's pants. But I looked down and saw that her son was also sporting high waters. And then we both started to laugh.
