Beer, sewers & back to school

BEER ME: To wash down Raleigh's Restaurant Week, the inaugural Raleigh Beer Week kicks off Monday and runs through Sept. 3. The celebration of local and imported rare beers includes at least two events each night until Friday. The New Raleigh website reports Mayor Charles Meeker will start the festivities at 6 p.m. Monday at The Borough. For more information, visit raleighbeerweek.blogspot.com.

A SLIMY $50: Keep your eye on local sewers to earn a few extra bucks. Raleigh is offering $50 rewards to residents who are first to alert the city of sewer overflows. From the city's website: "Although the City has staff that inspects the sanitary sewer collection system every day, with 2,300 miles of sewer mains in the City's service area to maintain, the City certainly needs the help of customers and citizens to find and report these problems when they occur.

WELCOME THE PIGSKIN PARADE: It's nearly September, which means America's old favorite pastime is winding down and the new pastime is just around the corner. College football in Raleigh begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, when N.C. State hosts Western Carolina.

SCHOOL'S IN: Thousands of elementary, middle and high-schoolers returned to school last week in Raleigh and throughout the Triangle. Some notable changes this year: Leesville schools returned to a traditional calendar, and some former Stough Elementary students are starting at Lacy after the school board's decision to move them back to their district.
