A lecture on "Slavery in 18th-Century North Carolina" is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Joel Lane Museum House Visitor's Center in Raleigh. The lecture is $15, or $10 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. To reserve, call 919-833-3431.

A free "Hoops for Haiti" basketball clinic to benefit children in Haiti is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at St. David's school gymnasium in Raleigh. All donations, which will be taken at the camp or online at www.freethekids.org, go to the "Free the Kids" organization, which helps orphans in Haiti. The clinic will be led by more than 20 local high school, middle school and recreational coaches. To register, go to www.assistbasketball.net.

Registration for Raleigh's youth baseball and softball leagues is Feb. 15-26 at all community centers. Baseball is for ages 5-18 and softball is for ages 6-16. Cost is $30 for city residents and $42 for nonresidents. For more information, call 919-831-6836.

Wake County's libraries are hosting a free series to help high school students and parents understand the basics of financial aid.
